Following up from an article I wrote recently entitled “The secret to doing work you love” I decided to make a short video to break down 3 components that I believe are essential to earn a living from doing work you love.
Step 1
Most of us trade our time for money and usually don’t have a solid plan in place to become financially independent. This means that we are usually working from one project to the next hoping that something will come in so that we can pay the bills. When we are in this situation it means we often take on projects that aren’t in line with our values. This is when we become unhappy, unfulfilled and frustrated. We get bored of the work because we cant see any higher purpose or meaning to it and it becomes just another job.
The first step in breaking this cycle is to find a way to earn money while you sleep. That might sound a bit odd but as soon as we are not trading our time for money we are moving towards financial independence which allows us to pick and choose what we work on. It means that we are not always earning money on other peoples terms but our own.
Step 2
In order to do this, we first need to find people who want to buy what we are offering. This is a crucial step in building your audience. If we treat everyone as our customer then we will end up building an audience of people who may be interested in what we are doing but are never actually going to buy our work. In my latest eBook “The creatives guide to building an online presence” I start with audience personas. These are essentially a description of a fake person, someone who you think is within your target audience or who you would like to buy your product. The reason this is important is because if we can find an interact with these people we have a strong chance of engaging them with our work.
Step 3
The final step to earn a living from doing work you love is to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Although digital platforms allow us to share our work with hundreds of thousands of people at the click of a button, there are hundreds of thousands of brands and individuals vying for our attention all of the time. So if you are just doing the same as everyone else you will get lost in the crowd. This essentially comes down to understanding how you can add value to your work and make your work valuable to others in ways that other people cant or haven’t.
